Honoring our colleagues (May, 2013)
Like many of you, I’ve had the opportunity to take part in several student-focused awards ceremonies and congratulatories in recent weeks. Every time I have a chance to meet students who are receiving recognition, I’m well aware of the fact that they wouldn’t be where they are today without the help of Student Affairs staff, interns and paraprofessionals.
So with this last message of the semester, I’d like to highlight the recipients of Student Affairs’ 2013 Outstanding Staff and Program Awards (OSPAs).
Outstanding New Staff Award
Dr. Nick Osborne is not only the Veteran Student Services Coordinator on our campus, but he’s also an Assistant Dean whose colleagues value his contributions as an Intake Dean in ODOS. Thanks largely to Nick’s dedication, GI Jobs Magazine has named Illinois one of the top Veteran-friendly campuses in the U.S. for two years in a row.
Outstanding Staff Awards
Everyone on campus seems to know La Tanya Cobb of the Illinois Leadership Center – and they universally appreciate her support, candor and positive attitude. Dr. Jim McEnerney, MD, plays a more behind-the-scenes role as director of the Women’s Health Clinic at McKinley Health Center, and his nominators said they couldn’t imagine a more supportive, caring, non-judgmental colleague.
Outstanding Program Award
The Counseling Center Paraprofessionals (CCPs) continue to do remarkable peer-to-peer education. The CCPs tell us they benefit from the program as much as their fellow students do! Carla McCowan and Theresa Benson accepted the award on behalf of the CCPs, many of whom were able to join them at the OSPA reception.
Nick, La Tanya, Jim and everyone involved in the CCP program – thank you! Our campus is a better place, and our students are better prepared for life, as a result of your selfless efforts on their behalf.
Have a great summer, everyone!
