Five Days for Change improves our campus climate (June, 2013)

If you think summer is a slow time for Student Affairs staff, guess again!
Planning for the 2013-14 academic year is well under way all over campus. Many of our facilities are undergoing deep cleaning and maintenance activities. Housing staff are busy getting acquainted with their new Director, Alma Sealine.
We do a lot of staff training and development, too – including a very important staff development opportunity that’s taking place this week.
Five Days for Change (5D4C) is a week-long training program that helps staff members understand how our own identities affect our interactions with others. Through 5D4C, staff learn how to use their own power, privilege and position to influence positive change in our campus climate.
Colleagues who have taken part in 5D4C often say it was a life-changing experience for them. If you know people who are participating this week, be sure to ask them how and why it changed some of their perspectives.
And if you haven't yet had the opportunity to personally experience 5D4C, I hope you'll think about applying to be part of the next cohort. We usually offer 5D4C in January (just before the start of Spring semester), and in June.
