Some well-deserved recognition (July, 2013)

Dear Colleagues,

When I go to national meetings, I’m always proud to represent Student Affairs at the University of Illinois. Our 1,200 staff members have a well-deserved reputation for innovation and excellence.

Peer recognition from national organizations is one visible sign of just how good our programs and people are. Two recent examples involve University Housing’s UI Dining App and The Career Center’s Hire Illini Channel on YouTube.

CASE – the Council for Advancement and Support of Education – recognized the UI Dining App with a Silver award. For those of you who aren’t familiar with CASE, their Pride of CASE awards are highly competitive, and this one is something we can all be very proud of.

The Career Center’s Hire Illini employer YouTube videos were recognized as a finalist for the National Association of Colleges and Employers’ (NACE) Innovation Excellence Award in the Technology category. TCC's Nell Madigan, Gail Rooney, Jennifer Neef and Sarah Zehr were honored at the NACE Annual Conference opening night awards ceremony in June.

Congratulations to these colleagues, and to others whose outstanding work has gained national attention throughout the year. It is a pleasure and a privilege to serve our students alongside you!

And the awards keep on coming!  (August, 2013)

Dear Colleagues,

People are always amazed when I tell them about the breadth of everything we do in Student Affairs. But the truth is that it’s the Student Affairs staff who do all of those things; staff are our most precious asset! They are experts in their fields, experienced, creative and care deeply about our students. It’s a winning combination. Here are two recent examples:

Our new Director of University Housing, Alma Sealine, received the James C. Grimm Leadership and Service Award from the Association of College and University Housing Officers‐International (ACUHO‐I). If you'd like to read more about Alma and this prestigious award, Housing's website has further details. Alma is the most recent Past President of ACUHO-I, and we're so delighted to have her join our leadership team here at Illinois.

Tom Betz, Directing Attorney with our Student Legal Services office, was awarded the Elizabeth Berg Streeter Community Service Award at last month’s National Legal Aid and Defender’s Association (NLADA) annual conference in Las Vegas. Tom was nominated for this honor by his wonderful staff in Student Legal Services at Illinois and granted this recognition by the NLADA’s Student Legal Services division. Tom received this honor for his outstanding “service to the legal community, social justice and equality.”

We welcome and congratulate Alma - and congratulate Tom, as well - for these well-deserved honors.
