Tony Clements, long time Student Affairs staff member, passes away

It is with great sadness that Campus Recreation and Student Affairs at Illinois announce that longtime staff member and former Director of Campus Recreation, Tony Clements, passed away Friday morning after a long battle with cancer. He was 68.

Tony began his career at Illinois in 1967 as an undergraduate student athlete who played both football and basketball (albeit not great at either – his words). He earned his M.A. from Illinois in 1972.

With Campus Recreation, he worked his way up from overseeing intramurals and community programs, to director of the department, at age 30, in 1979. He held that position until his retirement in 2008. His most visible impact as an administrator was the renovation of Campus Recreation Center-East (CRCE) and the renovation of IMPE that created the Activities and Recreation Center (ARC), along with the thousands of students and staff members he impacted in is 30+ years.

Tony was active in the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA), having served as President in 1988-89. He was presented NIRSA's most prestigious recognition, the NIRSA Honor Award, in 1996. He also received the University of Illinois Chancellor's Academic Professional Excellence Award in 2002. In 2003, he received the Monsignor Edward J. Duncan Service Award. This is presented annually to an Illinois "football letterman" who has displayed exemplary dedication to his community, state, and country.

Tony was also the interim CEO of the United Way of Champaign County, a stand-up comedian, motivational speaker, local radio personality, the official scorer for Illini men’s basketball, championship level softball player, and was recently inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches’ Association’s Hall of Fame as a Friend of Basketball.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 15 from 4-8 p.m. at Owens Funeral Home, 101 N. Elm St. in Champaign. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 16 at Stone Creek Church, 2502 S. Race St., Urbana.

Memorials may be made to the Don Moyer Boys and Girls Club, Carle Center for Philanthropy for Neuroscience Research, or the University of Illinois Foundation for the Clements Fund at Campus Recreation.
