Student Health Benefits: 101
Welcome
The University of Illinois provides two ways for you to seek affordable medical services. On campus, you may obtain services at the McKinley Health Center and the Counseling Center. In addition, every student is automatically enrolled in the Student Health Insurance plan that helps cover medical attention off campus.
Understanding Your Benefits
These pages have been created to help you figure out
- what your benefits are and how they are impacted by your status
- what's covered
- how to make claims
- what additional options are available
- when to come in and see us
These pages are intended for all student levels since every student must have health insurance -- whether you are an undergraduate, graduate, professional or international student.
Graduate and International Students
For more specialized information to accompany these pages, visit the Graduate College website or the International Students and Scholars Services (ISSS) website and ISSS handbook.
Your Insurance Cards
You will receive two cards: the grey card is used when seeking medical attention, and the white card is your prescription discount card (see this page for UnitedHealth Allies discount plan).
Keep your mailing address current
Insurance cards are mailed out at the end of August to the mailing address listed in the Illinois Enterprise System (Banner). To ensure that you receive yours, update your mailing address in the beginning of August by logging into your account.
If you don't receive or lose your cards
In the event that you don't receive – or lose your card(s) – you may request temporary cards by accessing the Student Health Insurance website where you will find instructions for ordering temporary cards after you log in or create an account. Contact the Student Health Insurance office to order permanent replacement cards as well.
