iWatch Safety graphic"iWatch" Safety Program on Campus

In response to the increased reporting of criminal activity on campus, Student Affairs units have collectively begun safety measures of their own to help students feel safer, to build a sense of community and to show students how to increase their awareness on campus. University Housing, Women's Resources Center and Parent Programs are just a few of the units implementing programs, facility security, and communications to inform and empower Illinois students to watch out for each other. The "iWatch" campaign directly involves Illinois students in sending out the message to support safety on campus.

To see how Student Affairs works for Illinois students, download our 2009-10 Annual Report/View Book (5mb pdf) for a recap of last year's accomplishments. We've included new information about our collaboration with academic units, interviews with staff and students and show our students at work alongside our staff. A huge "thank you"goes out to our dedicated donors who appreciate and support the work of our units.

5 Days for Change graphicFive Days for Change

Despite the rapid growth and continuing influx of a diverse population on campus, an undercurrent of misunderstanding and lack of acceptance continues to underlie a lack of cultural appreciation. In order to approach students with an increased global perspective, Student Affairs staff took five days– before the beginning of the spring semester – to explore diversity and cultural competency. This served to establish a more thoughtful acceptance for the wonderful diversity of not only our students, but our campus at large. The workshop was captured in a photo gallery that recapped the event.

TRiO Week graphicOMSA Celebrates National TRiO Week: February 20-26

TRiO Week celebrates the defeat of the Gramm-Rudman Hollings bill of 1986. TRiO – a group of federal college-focused educational programs created by the Educational Opportunity Act in 1964 – was created to remove social and financial barriers to enable and expand educational opportunities for students who otherwise might not have access to higher education. Campus Rec installed water bottle filling stations at fountains at the ARC in an effort to reduce plastic bottle usage and concluded a preliminary evaluation for adding solar thermal units. Additional Campus Rec sustainable efforts have also been highlighted online on MotherNatureNetwork.com by local blog correspondent and Illinois student Emily Staples.

This fall, University Housing saved nearly 4,300 gallons of water and reduced food waste by 3 tons – per day – as a result of going trayless. Boo-rah!
